NOT USING A CONTRACT

A contract protects the photographer, the client, and the photography industry. A good contract will set expectations and commit each party to following through with their commitments. If you are looking for a photographer, make sure they are using a contract. Professionals use contracts. Period.

DEPOSIT RATHER THAN A BOOKING FEE

The word deposit, by law and definition, is refundable. The purpose of a booking fee is to ensure the client shows up, come hell or high water. Photographers should use a non-refundable booking fee. In case of an emergency, that booking fee is either forfeited or transferrable per the contract to another portrait session.

AQUIRING TOO MUCH EXPENSIVE GEAR

It is difficult to start a business. Starting a photography business does not have to be complicated. Unfortunately, Photographers fall into the expensive gear trap. The business hinges on having the right equipment. New photographers, especially, get lured in by all the new fangled gear.

Keep it simple!  A good portrait photographer needs a solid camera body (two if you are a wedding photographer) , two low aperture lenses, a camera bag, a handful high quality SD cards, at least one or two spare batteries, and a few inexpensive speedlights.

Upgrading and adding additional gear should only be done when you are a viable business.

Tip: Find good quality, used camera bodies and lenses. Absolutely start by getting a 50mm 1.8 lens, and save up for a good 24-70 mm lens.

No RENEWAL OR SABBATH DAY

The word sabbath comes from the Hebrew word Shabbat, meaning a day of rest. It is not just a religious principle, it's common sense. Mental, emotional, and spiritual health has to become a priority. Almost all photographers experience burnout, and many quit after only a few years.

Pick a day to feed your soul, heal your body, and hearken to a higher spiritual power.
